About Industrial Safety Clothing

Industrial Safety Clothing

The oft-repeated line "It's better to be safe than sorry" has become more relevant today than it has anytime since the onset of the industrial Age. Industrial safety is the central focus of factory owners and other manufacturing establishments for the health and safety of their employees. Industrial safety clothing is an integral part of the safety measures adopted by such companies and comes in various materials and forms. Industrial safety clothing includes partial or complete body protection items ranging from safety gloves and boot covers to coverall, lab coats and more.

History

Industrial safety clothing had its roots in the late 1930s with the dawn of Industrial Revolution. However, during the mid-to late 1940s such items were further developed to protect armament factory workers in United States, England, Germany and other European nations who were involved in production of material to support the World War II effort. Rapid postwar industrialization also witnessed a marked increase in accidents leading to injury and loss of life. As a result stringent safety laws were enacted and the use of industrial safety clothing, among other safety items, become mandatory.

Significance

Industrial safety clothing is of great significance if one considers the incalculable loss of, or injury to, trained employees, in an accident. Moreover, any collateral damage could also add significantly to a company's losses. Of course, indirect loses could also involve legal costs, disruption to manufacturing and marketing programs and a lot more. Given the hazards associated with various types of industrial activity, industrial safety clothing assumes even more significance.

Considerations

The efficiency of industrial safety programs has a direct impact on the success of a company from a marketing and legal standpoint. Therefore, investment in industrial safety clothing and other items such as safety helmets, masks and eye-wear is of critical importance. All state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) organizations have made it mandatory for employers to provide adequate protection of their workers, particularly those exposed to hazardous environments in the workplace.

Benefits

Industrial safety clothing offers several benefits. However, the choice of type, style or material will depend on the specific nature of company's business and the particular hazards that its employees are likely to be exposed to. When combined with safety gloves, helmets, boots, masks and eye-wear, industrial safety clothing will offer complete body protection against most hazards.

The requirement for PPE

To ensure the greatest possible protection for employees in the workplace, the co-operative efforts of both employers and employees will help in establishing and maintaining a safe and healthful work environment.

In general, employers are responsible for :

  • Performing a "hazard assessment" of the workplace to identify and control physical hazards.
  • Training employees in the use and care of the PPE.
  • Maintaining PPE, including replacing worn or damage PPE.
  • Periodically reviewing, updating and evaluating the effectiveness of the PPE program.

In general, employers are responsible for :

  • Properly wear PPE.
  • Attend training sessions on PPE.
  • Care for, clean and maintain PPE.
  • Inform a supervisor of the need to repair or replace PPE.

Specific requirements for PPE are presented in many different OSHA standards. Some standards require that employers provide PPE at no cost to the employee while others simply state that the employer must provide PPE.
